N.D. Riley (1975). A field guide to the butterflies of the West Indies, 224 p., Collins, London.
All taxonomic and biogeographic data presented in this catalogue are drawn from Smith, Miller & Miller. Most of the biological data are drawn from the book by R. Pinchon and P. Enrico, (1969). Faune des Antilles Françaises. Les Papillons, 258 p., Fort de France. This work is especially useful for behaviour and Antillean host-plants.
The English names of butterflies are those recommended by the North American Butterfly Association (http://www.naba.org/pubs/enames.html). For strictly tropical species, we used the names given in Riley's book.
We collected few butterflies during our stays in the French Antilles, so the distribution maps poorly represent the actual abundance of species. For the same reason, some specimens shown in the catalogue are rather worn. We hope to add more data soon with the help of colleagues who stayed in the French Antilles (special thanks to Gérard Chovet and Francis Deknuydt). Additional information is welcome.
