Cicadellidae, Leafhoppers


[R] Large family of the order Homoptera, series Auchenorrhyncha; adults slender, usually tapering posteriorly and resting in a position ready for jumping; often leaping and readily taking to flight when disturbed; 4 to 6 nymphal instars; in temperate regions, overwintering in any of the stages, most often in the adult or the egg stage; typically phloem-feeding, some species being polyphagous while others are more restricted in their choice of hosts.
Certain leafhoppers are vectors of severe plant virus diseases. Important pest include the vine leafhopper (Empoasca vitis) and Scaphoideus titanus .
