Coccoidea, Scale insects


[R] Superfamily of the order Homoptera, division Sternorrhyncha; sexually dimorphic; females larviform, scale-like, gall-like or covered with a waxy exudate; males with one pair of wings (fore wings), antennae, legs (tarsi one-segmented), non-feeding.
The Coccoidea includes several important families, such as the Diaspididae and the Lecaniidae.

(idem); d: Coccus hesperidum (Lecaniidae), the scale is secreted by the insect; e: Olive black scale (Saissetia oleae), idem; f: Lepidosaphes sp. (Diaspididae), the scale is made by the accumulation of nymphal exuviae.
