Caterpillar


[R] Not so often used synonym for larva of Lepidoptera; body soft and elongate; head small but well-defined, comprising a highly sclerotized head capsule, a pair of short antennae, several small ocelli and biting mouthparts; thorax bearing 3 pairs of very short segmented legs, the terminal segment being provided with a claw; upper part of 1st thoracic segment called prothoracic plate; abdomen usually bearing 5 pairs of prolegs on segments 3 to 6 and on 10, each provided with crochets. Most caterpillars feed on living plants and certain species are extremely damaging.
