[R] Suspended development in insects. Diapause is triggered by an external event (for example the shortening of days in autumn); it is mostly broken (development starts again) once the organism has recorded a certain "quantity" of cold: in this case, the insect spends the winter without needing to search for food and resumes activity when climatic conditions become more favorable.
