Coleoptera


[R] Order of holometabolous insects; larvae of various kinds; adults bearing 4 pairs of wings; fore wings modified into hard elytra meeting in a straight line; hind wings membranous, often large, sometimes reduced or absent and folded beneath the elytra when at rest; mouthparts adapted for biting.
Major pest families are the Elateridae, the Buprestidae, the Nitidulidae, the Chrysomelidae, the Bruchidae, the Curculionidae, the Scolytidae, the Silphidae, the Cerambycidae, the Cryptophagidae, the Harpalidae, the Pterostichidae, the Rhynchitidae and the Scarabaeidae.
